Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a sung-through musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice (lyrics), based on the biblical story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis. The musical follows Joseph, the favourite son of Jacob, who receives a magnificent multi-coloured coat from his father. Joseph's brothers become jealous, especially because of his prophetic dreams that suggest he will one day rule over them. Consumed by envy, they sell him into slavery and tell their father that he has been killed by a wild animal.

The musical concludes with themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, hope, and the idea that difficult experiences can lead to unexpected opportunities. Told with humor and a wide variety of musical styles—including pop, rock, country, calypso, French ballad, and Elvis-inspired rock and roll—it is one of the most popular family musicals ever written.
